A tricycle is usually a child’s first experience of steering something themselves. Buying the right one at the right stage is the difference between daily use and a garage ornament.

Around 18 months: parent in control

At this age your child is a passenger who thinks they are driving, and that is exactly right. Look for a detachable parent push-handle that actually steers the front wheel, a five-point harness, a footrest for when their legs cannot reach the pedals, and a canopy if you will be out in the sun.

2 to 3 years: learning to pedal

The transition stage. You want pedals that can be disengaged so the child can push with their feet first, a handle you can remove once they take over steering, and a low centre of gravity so it does not tip on a turn.

3 years and up: independent riding

Now the tricycle is theirs. Priorities shift to a comfortable seat at the right height, responsive but not twitchy steering, a working brake, and a frame that will take some abuse.

What to check regardless of age

Tricycle or bicycle with training wheels?

A tricycle is more stable and works earlier, from around 18 months. A bicycle with training wheels teaches balance sooner but generally suits a child of three or above. A multi-stage trike that converts as the child grows covers both, which is why convertible designs tend to stay in use longest.
